The recent debacle with Dan Harmon being ousted from “Community” has reignited my interest in genius TV showrunners, and the spotlighted (spotlit?) fact that in today’s Internet age, these people (Harmon, Joss Whedon, Damon Lindeloff/Carlton Cuse, etc etc) are stars unto themselves.
Side note that should go without saying: I agree when I hear talk about the second golden age of television. I think television as an art form has come a long way - but is still underrated. The best shows of all time can stand up against the best films of all time.
inky:
TVs are designed to do one thing above all: sell. To do so, they must fight for attention on brightly-lit showroom floors. Manufacturers accomplish this in much the same way that transvestite hookers in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district do—by showing you everything they’ve got, turned up to eleven.
You want brightness? We’ll scald your retinas. You want sharpness? We’ll draw a black outline around everything for you. Like bright colors? We’ll find them even in Casablanca. Oh, and since you associate “yellowing” with age and decay, we’ll also make the image as blue as a retiree’s bouffant on Miami beach.

Great work, as always, from Kagan McLeod.

If you like shadowy, tense character dramas that deliver the goods in bits and pieces, a “spy” show for those of us left in America who do not have attention deficit disorder, then you should be watching Rubicon. I don’t see it get a ton of press, which makes me worried about it’s odds. Check it out.

This show channels your inner dude. You don’t have to be a fantasy football fan, but it doesn’t hurt. Either way, you’re in for one of the best comedies on television.
